The stops

2. Cambridge· en route

Punt the Backs past King's College chapel — two hours of perfect England before rejoining the road.

3. York· 1 night

The Minster, the Shambles and the city walls circuit — England's best-preserved medieval city rewards an overnight.

4. Windermere· 2 nights

Lake District base: Orrest Head's view converted Wainwright, and it's a 20-minute walk from town. Grasmere and gingerbread next door.

5. Edinburgh· 2 nights

Finish on the Royal Mile with the castle above and Leith's Michelin stars below — August means the Fringe takes over everything.

Good to know

Skip the M1 slog where you can — the A1 via York and the M6 via the Lakes split naturally into this route. York and Edinburgh both punish cars; use park-and-rides. Lake District summer weekends jam solid by 10 am (Windermere ferry queues especially) — weekdays or September transform it.
