The route at a glance

  1. Nice — 1 night
  2. Monaco — stop en route
  3. Genoa — 1 night
  4. Santa Margherita Ligure — 1 night
  5. Milan — 2 nights

The stops

1. Nice· 1 night

Walk the Promenade early, buy socca in the old town, and leave before the airport traffic builds.

2. Monaco· en route

An hour is enough for the Casino square, the harbour and one very expensive coffee — the drive on the Moyenne Corniche above it is the real event.

3. Genoa· 1 night

Italy's most underrated big city: caruggi alleys, the old port, and the best pesto on the planet in its home town.

4. Santa Margherita Ligure· 1 night

Elegant base for Portofino (boat or the coastal footpath) and San Fruttuoso's abbey cove.

5. Milan· 2 nights

Duomo rooftop at golden hour, Navigli aperitivo after — and The Last Supper if you booked weeks ahead.

Good to know

The A10/A12 'Autostrada dei Fiori' is spectacular but toll-heavy (budget ~€25–35). Portofino's tiny car park fills by 10 am in season — park in Santa Margherita and take the boat. May, June and September have Riviera weather without August's gridlock.
